This is Emily's mom here! Emily flew out of the Salt Lake City airport on Monday 1/25/2016 and arrived in Indianapolis later that day. She traveled with 9 other sisters plus 4 elders. See the super cute picture above of them at the airport right before boarding their plane. While at the SLC airport, she was able to call home!!!! YAY! We were able to talk to her for about 30 minutes. It was so awesome to hear her voice. She told us a little bit more about her MTC experience. She absolutely loved it! Sounds like she made wonderful friends and worked very hard and the 12 days there just flew by.
There were about 40 missionaries leaving on Monday 1/25 and they had to "check out" from the MTC and get their travel documents that morning at 3:30am at the MTC travel office. Then they bussed over to the Provo train station which took them into SLC where they changed trains to the TRAX which dropped them at the airport. She said it was awesome being with such a large group and they had to work together to quickly get themselves and all their luggage on and off the trains.
On Wednesday 1/27/2016, we received an email from her mission president President Cleveland saying she had arrived in Indianapolis safely. And then Friday 1/29/2016, we received another email saying she has been assigned to the Lafayette 1st and 2nd wards plus her apartment mailing address:
Sister Emily Griffiths
2353 Yeager Road #5
West Lafayette, IN 47906
Lafayette is where the Purdue University is located and her apartment is about 1 mile away from there! We had talked about Purdue University before her mission, so its so cool that she will be right next to it for her first area! My super reliable info (i.e. Google) shows this area to be green and really pretty, definitely a college town with lots of interesting places including the Wabash River that runs through the city.
The mission office secretary said to expect Emily to be assigned here for the next 12 weeks and that we would hear from her via email on Monday, her preparation day (P-day).
We love Emily and miss her tons but know she is working hard and having a great experience!
Alesha Griffiths (mom)
I am seriously so tired. And its ridiculous because I literally sit in a chair in class almost all day, but because of all the stuff we are learning and feeling the spirit all day it wears us out! Once I get into bed at night I pass out so fast and it feel like 5 minutes went by and then you have to get up and get ready for the day again. We were joking with our district (the people that are in my class and spend all day every day with) about how this week has just felt like one really long day divided up by meals and a couple naps hahaha. Classes are good. They are just like super long Sunday school classes or EFY classes. And we are soooo busy all day! Its crazy! Like I don't even have time to do anything else, so its been nice today to just relax a bit more.
Anyways, as long and hard as this week has been, its been AMAZING!!! Its crazy how much I've learned already! I can't wait to get out into the field! We leave for Indianapolis on Monday (1/25) morning. We have a layover in Minnesota and then get to Indiana at about 4pm in the afternoon. I can't wait!
So like I said, this week was long and hard. We are in class almost all day. Most days we have 2, 3 hour classes plus 3 meals, and lots of study time. Sometimes we will have special things like Sunday and Tuesday night devotionals and then we had a special Missionary Broadcast yesterday which was super cool and every missionary around the world got to watch it!
The food is super good (we get ice cream every Wednesday when the new missionaries come in and on Sunday - - its always a big thing that we get it haha!) and the people are even better! I love my companion Sister O so much! She is so cute yet so smart. She always knows what to say to me and how to help me. She even made my bed for me the other day! So sweet! I also love the other sisters that are in my district! Sister R is hilarious! She is constantly making us laugh (mostly because her laugh is so funny). And Sister V is so kind and awesome to talk to. Everyone in our district is soooo awesome! I love them so much! We are already best friends and its only been a week! Crazy! But they are all so smart and have different aspects or ideas to contribute to class.
So this week we had our first investigators! They are people from outside the MTC that come in to be taught. And they could be members or non-members and we dont know which. But they all act as if they are investigators. The first one we had, Lucia, was super nice and understanding and was just wanting to know more. She has progressed a good amount and committed to pray:) The other investigator, Jonathan, was pretty difficult at first. But we just learned to love him and show him what God's love feels like and he finally opened up and is super enthusiastic about learning the gospel! Its been a great experience.
I learned so much about pure, sincere love this week. Everything in the gospel is centered around love. The reason Heavenly Father does what He does, the Atonement, even just the things we are asked to do in our everyday lives is because of love! I cant wait to get to Indiana and show those people how much I love them and Heavenly Father loves them!
I hope you all are doing well and I've been loving your emails and letters, keep em comin:) If you wanna send letters, from now on start sending them to Indiana! The address is:

Note from Emily's mom: Here's some other info Emily sent in a separate email to us:
"So everyone in our district is super awesome. We have 10 people and we are literally with them every single second of everyday. We are in class together most of the day (always with the same 2 teachers) and we eat together and have the same exercise time together. We are already best friends and we've only known each other for a week hahaha. So there is Elder P, he's the district leader and from Nampa ID. He's super funny and sassy and he's just like the big brother of the group. We call him the teddy bear. Then his companion is Elder S. He's from Atlanta. He's super smart and knows all these references and we have no idea how he does it. Then there is Elder T who is from Canada! He is a bit quieter but is super funny when you get him going and he just loves everyone. His companion is Elder P who is from Salem UT. He's super tall and sorta reminds me of Drew haha. He talks about playing the cello all the time but we haven't heard him yet. He has a musical number planned for Sunday so we will have to see! Then there is Elder C. Hes from a super small town in ID and lives on like a farm. He has an accent too. He is super quiet and never really speaks but when he does its always so on point whether its about something in class or just a funny joke. We noticed everytime he speaks that we get super quiet and always listen to what he says. His companion is Elder L. He is funny and just loves talking."
Emily said that if you want to mail her letters that would be great! She has more time to read those than the emails. Her address in Indianapolis is above.
Surprise! I've only been gone one day and I'm already emailing! They scheduled us a mini pday today so we can write to our family and let them know we are alive and doing well:) Haha so...I'm alive and doing well!
The MTC is awesome! I already love everyone here! Yesterday since we had the "dork dots" on (a little orange sticker on our name tags that lets everyone know its your first day here) everyone we passed by talked to us and welcomed us to the MTC. Everyone is so friendly! But thats kinda like BYU, so I guess its not that different. Speaking of BYU, its weird being just down the street from school (I can see the bell tower and Heritage dorms from our windows) and my friends without having any access to it.
So the first day was a lot to take in! I laid in bed last night awake for a long time just so I could take everything in. When we pulled up, a nice sister helped we with my luggage and took me to a series of different buildings where I picked up my name tags, books, keys and other important stuff. Then they took me to my room where I just set my stuff down and left again. Then she took me to my classroom (its the same classroom you're in all day, everyday, the whole time you're here). On the way there I met some of the sisters in my zone including the sister training leader! They're super nice and took me to my class. They also live next door to us! Then we met everyone in our class and I met my companion! Sister Ostermiller! Shes from Rexburg and is going to the same mission as me! So are the other 2 sisters in my class (that I also live with).
Then we got all together (all the new missionaries) and had a devotional thing which was super awesome! And theres a ton of missionaries! Next we had dinner and free time. That night we got to teach (in a group setting) 3 different investigators! It was super awesome and super real! (The whole time we kept debating weather they were real or not). You could feel the spirit so much in those rooms. Then we got to meet our zone and district leader and they took us on a tour. And then we ended for the night!
We also got to meet the other 2 sisters that live with us (theres 6 total). They're super awesome! Especially because they are going to Tahiti and have to learn french AND tahitian while in the MTC! Crazy!
Anyways, it was a long, crazy, fun day! And I've already learned so much! I cant wait for classes today! The sun is finally coming up! And we have class in about an hour!
I love you all so much and miss you!
Today was my missionary farewell at church. It went super well! All of my family was there and some friends and just the people from the ward. Sister Allen (who was my seminary teacher for TWO years, and is very special to me) spoke first, then Sister Rice (who was one of my primary teachers, YW president for a bit, and my Laurel class teacher) and I was last. Afterwards we went back to our house for lunch with the whole family and then at 3:45 I will go back to the church to be set apart! Its crazy that it has come up so fast! And I'll officially be a missionary tonight!
Check out my mission farewell talk here.
