Hello!!!!!!!!!!!! Welp, here's a little about my week!
Saturday: After we emailed in the morning we went to a place called McCormicks Creek in Martinsville IN (about 20 min north of us). Its a state park I think. But it was beautiful and so much fun! We hiked all day! We got lost quite a few times but we made it out alive!
Sunday: Church was empty! It was the first week of summer so everyone has left us! So sad:( There was about 20 people total, including the 6 missionaries! Yikes! It was good nonetheless! Then that afternoon we surprised our good friend Sister Pettay with flowers (picked from outside the senior folks home) and a card! We didn't think we would be able to make it over like we normally do, but we ended up having an extra hour so we surprised her and she loved it! That night we got to Skype home! Yaayy!!! It was so good to talk to the fam! And crazy to think that this is the last time I will see them till I'm home!
Monday: We taught Andre in the morning about families and temples! He loved it! It was awesome when he said that he wants a family one day that can be stable on a foundation of the Gospel! That evening we went to the Clark family's home for dinner! We had a fun BBQ outside at the fire pit and had hot dogs and s'mores!
Tuesday: We taught Davey in the morning, a member of the branch. He's goin' through a hard time so we decided to have lessons with him every so often. It was a super funny conversation, but we got around to talking about blessings and how they can help us. It was super hot all day so we would walk around on campus a bit and then find something to do where we could take a break inside and cool off and then go back out. Campus has been pretty empty now that its summer. We only have the chance to talk to a few people each day. Then we went and did service for Sister Pettay and had dinner with her! That night we had a lesson with Naser. We talked about the path to God, which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ and where he was on the path and what he needs to do in order to progress. We talked a lot about prayer which was really powerful!
Wednesday: Was a loonnggggg day! It was hot and we didn't have anything scheduled all day except for walking around campus! But it was good! We found some cool people that we talked to! That afternoon we had a lesson with Jessica! We met with her once the 2nd week I was here and then her life got crazy and we weren't able to meet with her. But we saw her! And she is awesome! She read through the whole pamphlet and had a ton of questions for us! She was so sincere and we had a really good discussion about the nature of God.
Thursday: We tried in the morning to give out homemade snickerdoodles with a conference quote as a different way to talk to people but we only got to talk to 1 person! It was fun anyways! Then we had interviews with President Carlson which went well! In the afternoon we went to MCUM (the food pantry) to volunteer and then had pizza for dinner!
Friday: We taught Andre again in the morning and we had Zoey there with us! She's a member of the branch. We just had a good discussion together where we were able to answer some of his questions and concerns. He finally understood the idea of the promise of baptism! And it clicked with him that God will always keep His promises! He told us that that concept has brought him a lot of comfort because no matter what is uncertain in life, God is always constant! So cool! We also taught Jose! We met him at his work and went to lunch with him for his lunch break! We asked how his praying went in the 2 weeks that we didn't see him and he told us how we went to the forest so he could be alone and pray aloud! He said he hasn't received a solid answer yet but that he has the faith God will answer him soon! On our way walking back we got caught in a SURPRISE rain storm! We were in it for about 2 minutes, while running frantically to shelter. By the time we got there it looked like we jumped into a pool in our clothes! We were soaking!!!! It was a good little adventure. We waited it out and then walked back. We didn't dry until AFTER dinner!
I wanted to share a little bit about repentance. For most of us, hearing the work repentance is kind of scary! We think of something we have to do because we have made a huge mistake in our life. I have been studying and learning a lot about faith and repentance lately and its such a simpler process than we think. And the most amazing thing is that we can do it every day! And its all because of the Savior Jesus Christ! The enabling power of His atonement is SO powerful in our lives!
"Rely on the Lord, for only He can turn a mess into a message, a test into a testimony, a trial into a triumph, and what's broken into something beautiful."
"There is no choice, sin, or mistake that you or anyone else can make that will change His love for you or for them." -Ronald A. Rasband
Wow! This week was pretty eventful even though its summer on campus and there are waayyyyyy fewer people to talk to....its sorta dead.
Andre: IS AWESOME! We had 2 lessons with him this week! He is doing so great and just LOVES commandments sooo much! Which is awesome, because most people have a problem with them and don't want "restrictions", but its amazing because Andre sees them as a guideline on how he should live his life to be a better person!
Thinh: We also saw him twice this week! He is also doing amazing! He has said 3 prayers with us so far and its the first time he has ever prayed ever! They are so amazing and sincere! We taught him about the Restoration and the Book of Mormon! One of his comments was "I know that this information is valuable."!! Yaayy!!!!
Transfers: On Tuesday we drove to transfers to help out with our zone. We had to say goodbye to our good french friend, Elder Boutoille, and our courtyard friend, Elder Huntington, whos area was closed! And our other friend Elder Campbell finished his mission! Sad to see people go and get moved around but we gained some good missionaries too!
Gifts: On Wednesday we got a surprise from one of our amazing members! She works at Francesca's in the mall and decided to be super awesome and get us necklaces!!! She looked us up on Facebook to find out our first names and then got us an "E" and "B" necklace.
MLC: Was yesterday! It was pretty good! We had some good trainings and discussion! I learned a TON to help our investigators so hopefully we will be able to use it this week!
Something super awesome that I was reminded of this week was the power of the Holy Ghost in Conversion! I was reminded that when we teach people we can only say so much and do so much to help them! But when the Holy Ghost is in the mix, that's when the true change and conversion happens! Elder Bednar said at a training that we can "bring the truth unto the hearts of people, but only the Spirit can bring it INTO their hearts." Love it! Its so true! So for you all, remember the the Holy Ghost is such an important part of your life! Seek to have it with you all the time so it can teach you the things God wants you to know at this time!
Love you all! Have a great week!
This week was so wet! It basically rained all day every day this week! But we survived!
- First off we just got our transfer news this morning and both Sister Jones and I are staying on IU campus for another 6 weeks!!!! Yayyyyy!!!!! That's what we were hoping would happen:)
- Thinh: A new investigator that we taught on Sunday! He was someone we met when we did the cookie booth on campus a few weeks ago! He is so awesome and SOO prepared to be taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ! We talked about God and prophets and the Priesthood and he loved it all! We are so excited to continue working with him!
- Monday was full of miracles!!!
- We met with Hyesong! He is also someone we met at the cookie booth. He is amazing and already knows so much about the Gospel because he was taught by missionaries for a few months, a couple years back!
-We also taught Joel. We met him on campus a couple weeks ago! He is a very strong Christian and we had a really good conversation about the Gospel
-J.O.S.E!!!! HE IS OUR MIRACLE CHILD! We taught him for the first time on Tuesday! He is another person that we met from the cookie booth! He is SOOO prepared to hear the Gospel and accept it! It was amazing! He said that he is "lost and searching for light" in his life, so we taught him about the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and he LOVED IT! He even said his first non-recited prayer with us and it was so sincere!
-Thursday I went on exchanges with Sister Kammerman! I LOVEEE that girl!!! She is amazing:) We had a great day! We taught Andre in the morning about some more commandments! He LOVES commandments! He says that they're a great way for him to have a guideline to know what he should do in life!
-Friday we saw Davey and he is great! He is going through some struggles so we got to have a good long talk, but it is good that we can turn to Christ in hard times like that:)
-ANNDD for the big finaleee.......*drumrollllll* ZACH, JOSH, AND MOISES GOT BAPTIZED ON SATURDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow! It was sooo amazing! They are all from my last area (Indianapolis), but since I taught them for a while we got permission to go up and be there for it! The best part was that Eddie (their BEST friend and recent convert) got to be the one to baptize them! It was so special and the spirit was soooooo strong!
It was an AMAZING week! Thanks for all your support, prayers and emails:) Love you all!
This week was a great week! So many good and sad things happening but its all for the best!
Sunday: Between the 3 set of missionaries that we had on campus there were 7 investigators at church! Wow! It was so cool seeing so many new people there! That afternoon we went to go and visit Sister Pettay, shes a member in the family ward but shes old and lives alone so we go and visit her and she likes to feed us! We helped her mend some clothes and move some things around in her apartment. Afterwards we had a conference call with the zone leaders and the stake about the missionary work going on! Right after that the elders had a lesson so they left to go meet up with him. We got a call from them 5 minutes later telling us that they found one of our long lost investigators and that he wanted to talk to us! We R A N!!! We totally booked it down the street to meet up with him! He was so sweet and seemed to be doing well and we set up an appointment to see him later in the week. (Story to be cont.) That night we had homemade pizza with some awesome members and then went to visit the Strongs, the senior missionary couple here, to pick up food! They are leaving to go back home this week and were cleaning out their kitchen and wanted us, the poor missionaries, to have all the food! They are so nice!
Monday: What a long day! We emailed president in the morning and then had some lunch at the institute. We did a little bit of planning and contacting on campus and then we came back to say goodbye to the Strongs! They had their final Institute class (we didn't actually have a class, we just talked about our awesome memories with them) and then took pictures, cried and saluted them as they drove off! That night we had dinner at the dorms with some members that live there and then played ultimate frisbee for FHE.
Tuesday: ZONE CONFERENCE! All day long! But it was great! I learned a ton of new things and thought of some new ways that we could approach teaching people! Afterwards we went back to institute to just do some planning and maybe go on campus, and we get a call from the Assistants! They wanted to know where to go and park if they wanted to walk around on IU campus! We told them to come to the institute and that we could show them around! It was way fun! Both of the elders served with me in my last area, IUPUI, so it was great to see them and talk! It was nice and warm and there was a ton of people outside so we talk to talk to them too! When we came back the elders were STILL in their lesson and the sisters looked concerned....so we got very worried! It was a lesson with Christina, a girl who was getting baptized this weekend! When they finally came out we could tell something was wrong. She left and one of the elders was crying and they said that she didnt wanna be a part of this anymore! It was so heart breaking because we had really come to love her and she was amazing! We were all bummed and hungry so I made a bunch of food for us! Then after the elders left we devised a plan to help them cheer up! We were going to "note attack" their door! So we got a bunch of paper and markers and drew stuff and wrote stuff and then stuck it all to their door! It ended up being a fun night:)
Wednesday: We did a little bit of family history work in the morning! That was so interesting and fun! Then we had lunch, and went out on campus to talk to people! It was pretty good, but pretty slow. This week is "dead week" and next week is finals. So everyone seems to be very grumpy and stressed. It was also SOOO hot! It was actually the hottest day in Bloomington in 2017! So we could only be outside for an hour and then would have to take a popsicle break:) Later that night we had dinner with a member and then went to one of the institute classes! It was all about the Articles of Faith (written by Joseph Smith)! SO GOOD!
Thursday: In the morning we had our miracle investigator (see story above on Sunday) call and say that he wasn't interested in meeting with us at all but that he appreciated what we did. He was so kind but it broke our hearts to hear him reject the Gospel. Later we went to a food pantry to volunteer! It was really fun! And they gave us t-shirts! Then we got back and walked around on campus to talk to people with little luck. We went and had dinner with Sister Pettay which was really good! After that we headed to ARP and then stopped by the institute and got to be surprise guests at the Mission Prep class!
Friday: What a good day! We started the day off with a lesson with Andre! He is amazing! We taught him about the commandments and how they are given to us to help us understand what God wants us to do in life! They are like the guardrail to keep us in life and to bring us the most happiness and blessings! He loved it and said that he would continue to do his best to keep them! Yay! Then we had lunch and helped set up for the Institute graduation that was in the evening. We walked around campus for a bit and everyone was EXTRA grumpy today! At the very end, on our way back we talked to this guy at the bus stop named Jack. He was awesome! He knows one of the members of the branch and was very open about what he believes/doesn't believe. Sad story: we made him miss TWO buses! We felt so bad! But in our defense the bus drivers didn't even look to see if someone was waiting and just drove right by! LAME! But it was sorta worth it because Jack was awesome and we are excited to talk to him again! That afternoon we went to a Recital! It was for a girl, Annika, in our branch who is graduating from the Jacobs School of Music in OPERA! WOW was she amazing! Im pretty sure she will be famous one day! And right after that was the Institute graduation! Towards the end it started STORMING a ton outside and the lightening and thunder was sooo distracting! By the end no one was paying attention to the speakers, they were just looking out the window hahahaha.
WELP! That was my week! A pretty long one yet it went by so fast! Its amazing to start looking back at my mission and all that's happened. It seems like I've done soooo much, yet it feels like I just got here! Its crazy to think that I only have 3 months left in this amazing place with these amazing people sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ! But it was so worth it! I wish I could be a missionary forever, but I can't, so I'm just grateful for the chance that I did have to be here!
Love you all! Have an amazing week!
This week was a great one! Let me give you a quick run down...
Sunday: CHURCH and EASTER! *see pictures below* Andre came! It was great!
Monday: Finding during the day. Dinner at Ming Liong's restaurant with the senior missionary couple, the Strong's. It was delicious! Volleyball for FHE.
Tuesday: Walked around campus all day to talk to people! The elders "sniped" us while we were talking to some guys. *see pictures below* We got a little tired so we found some chalk and chalked the sidewalks on campus with Mormon-y stuff! *see pictures below*
Wednesday: District meeting! It was good:) Then more finding on campus! We ran into one of the elders' investigators and she told us about this scavenger hunt going on on campus that day so we did it with her! We talked to some cool people while we were doing it and got a free t-shirt, water bottle, stickers n stuff at the end!
Thursday: Met with Ava and did Personal Progress. Service at the food pantry! Dinner with Jeff and Sam! Super good HOMEMADE Japanese food! Also Jeff has a lizard! *see pictures below* Then we saw Naser! He is great!
Friday: CRAZY DAY! We were on exchanges with the other sisters that are on campus with us! I was with Sister Yu. Shes amazing! She is from China and has been here her whole mission! We had 7 lessons back to back the WHOLE day! It was a little crazy but it worked out! Sooooo many miracles from EVERYONE!
Studies and lessons this week seemed to have a theme of Personal Progression! I love the idea that we can continue to be better every single day! And its through the amazing power of Christ's Atonement! D&C 88:6-7, 11 "He that ascended up on high, as also he descended below all things, in that he comprehended all things, that he might be in all and through all things, the light of truth; which truth shineth. This is the light of Christ. ...And the light which shineth, which giveth you light, is through him who enlighteneth your eyes"
Love you all! Have a great week!
Hey everyone! I hope you all have a great Easter tomorrow!
Sorry....but you're gonna get another shorter email today. The longer I'm out the less motivated I am to write about my life to you all...BUT because I love you I will give you somethin, but its still gonna be short! Sorry!
We had a great week this week on campus! We had exchanges on Tuesday with Sister Hardy and Sister Boren! It was so fun! Then on Thursday we set up a booth on campus with the other sisters and the elders! It was so awesome! We had signs up that said "Ask a Mormon a question for a cookie!" There were soooo many cookies AND PEOPLE! Yay! So many people talked to us and were actually interested in what we were saying! It was an amazing experience! Although we have a ton of leftover cookies that we are trying to pass off to other people so we don't eat them all ourselves. Thursday night we went to the temple and it was A M A Z I N G!!! Then spent the night with the sister that are in Fishers, Sister Dawes (my baby!!!!) and Sister Smith! It was so fun:) Yesterday we had a meeting with President, the Assistants and all the Zone Leaders and Sister Training Leaders in Fishers! It was a good meeting and we learned some cool things!
One thing that stuck out to me this week in my studies was the idea of grace and faith! I love the fact that we can continually grow our faith no matter what! And its only through the grace of Jesus Christ and His Atonement! He showed us the way and we can follow it! We don't have to be perfect at it, it was part of the plan that we aren't perfect! And that's the amazing thing that we can continue to grow and improve and every time we do, and are willing to, God will help and bless us! One of my favorite scriptures is found in the Book of Mormon. Ether 12:27 "And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them."
I hope you all have a lovely week! Love you!
Hey everyone! We are enjoying some NICCEEEE weather over here! Its finally spring! And its beautiful!
We had a great week filled with lots of missionary things!
We had a cool lesson with our Catholic friend Jessica! We had a good talk about faith and why its so important and she loved hearing about why we do what we do!
We also enjoyed Jesus' birthday on Thursday with a lady that lives in a senior home! She took us to dinner! She also made us sing happy birthday to Jesus...it was pretty funny!
On Saturday we got to go back to my last area for a baptism!! Yaayyy!!! Stacie got baptized! She was a referral online for us and we met with her and taught her and then she dropped us! We were so sad because she was so amazing and we felt like she was prepared for the Gospel of Jesus Christ! But she came back around and was baptized this weekend! She was so precious and just glowing when she came out of the water :) Love her!
Welp! Thats about it for the highlights! I dont have much time, plus I know you all enjoy the pictures the best!
Love, Sister Griffiths
Hey everyone! I hope you all had a great week and enjoyed hearing the words from our loving Prophet and Apostles! I sure did!
This week was full of emotions! It started off with sating goodbyes last Monday! It was so sad and I really didn't want to leave the amazing people that I met in Indianapolis!
Tuesday was transfer day! We made a quick stop at Long's Bakery in the morning to have their famous donuts! Then we headed to the mission office! I hung out with Sister Miles the whole time because she was GOING HOME! I was so sad to see her leave! I also said goodbyes to the people I was serving with and Sister Burgon! I love that girl! Then I got my new companion and we headed down to Bloomington, my new area! We dropped off my stuff at home and then went to campus at IU (Indiana University). It is a HUGGEEEEE campus! Like WOW! With a ton of people everywhere!
Wednesday was my first full day here! We contacted people in the morning and had a super cool miracle of finding people and they are really prepared to hear the gospel! It was a little grace that God let me see on my first day :) We had lunch and then went and got ICE CREAM with the elders and sisters to celebrate Sister Jones and Sister Yu's halfway mark and Elder Boutoille's 20 month mark! It was some REALLY good ice cream! Then we came back to the Institute building (its a building where they hold institute of religion classes for the students on campus that are member's of the church) to meet up with Benjamin, an investigator, to teach a lesson! Sister Porter (the sister whose spot I took) got to Skype into the lesson! It was so cool to have her there! It was a great lesson and I already love Benjamin!
Thursday morning we had a District/Zone meeting! There are some awesome missionaries here and i'm excited to serve with them! Then we did more contacting on campus, service at a food pantry! It was a fun day, especially because we got RAINED on! So funny story. We were contacting people on campus and it got dark all of a sudden. Then it started sprinkling. It was getting close to the time we needed to head back so we started walking toward the institute building. (still a good 15 min walk) and then it starts raining harder and harder and harder! And now we are really wet! Just trying to walk fast to get home! Then it is a TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUURRR!!!!! WE ARE SOAKING WET, FEET GUSHING WATER AND MAKEUP RUNNING DOWN MY FACE! We walked into the institute building...looking like we just went swimming in our clothes and the elders and sisters were sitting there and just stared at us and said "wow, you guys are wet!" hahahaha it was so crazy!
Friday was just more of the same stuff!
Saturday and Sunday was GENERAL CONFERENCE!!!!! On Saturday we watched it at the institute building with a bunch of people and with food and games in between! And then on Sunday we watched it at a members house! They made us "breakfast" for lunch! In between we went on a walk to the park which was fun! And then after it was over we played this hilarious game called "watch your mouth". We all got a good ab workout from laughing so hard!
Insights: Theres 2 talks that I wanted to talk about!
M Joseph Brough: He talked about how Heavenly Father has given us each our own "care package' for this life! It includes things like Him, our Savior, families, the scriptures, words from the prophet, commandments, etc. He listed 3 ways that we can feel this care package working in our lives: 1) Live the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 2) Connect with Heaven. 3) Let go. I loved this people it really helped me know and feel that God does love me and He does help me all the time!
Jeffery R Holland: IS AMAZING! His talks always speak to me! He talked about how we are all part of Gods choir. If we have moments in life where we have to stand there silent, thats ok because the people around us will make up for it. But he said do everything you can to STAY in the choir! It wouldn't be the same without you there! Its also ok to be different! The best choirs have 4, 5, 6 different parts, but that doesn't mean we can stand up there are sing whatever we want! We have to be within the realm of the song and the conductor (the Gospel of Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father as the conductor). GOD IS DETERMINED TO MAKE OF US MORE THAN WE COULD EVER IMAGINE.
I love you all so much and hope you enjoy your week!
-sister emily griffiths
Welp! Looks like I'm gettin transferred to a new area! I am sooooooo sad to leave Indy! But I'm sure my new area is going to be great! I'm getting transferred to.....drumm rolllll pleasseee......IU-Bloomington! I'm going to another campus! And my new companion is Sister Jones! It should be a good time down there!
Highlights from the week:
Tuesday: Haircut! Yay! Also, dinner at Yats (a super cool Cajun restaurant).
Wednesday: SUPER awesome lesson with Eddie (a recent convert) and his 2 good friends, Zach and Josh! They are amazing! And they were so into the lesson and understanding everything we talked about and basically just had a cool discussion about the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! They also understood the Priesthood authority and wanted to be baptized by it!
Also visited someone from Sis B's last ward who was in the hospital across the street! She was so sweet and excited to see us:)
Thursday: ZONE CONFERENCE! It was soooooo good! We had a re-cap from what we learned with Brother Donaldson (from when he toured the mission)!
Later that night we had a lesson with Moises, one of Eddie's other good friends, and it was another GREAT lesson! He understood it all too! Its fun to see the "4 amigos" learn the Gospel together:)
Friday: Lots of walking around on campus trying to find people to talk to! We went to Johnzee's debate to run for president of the African Student Association Club! He did awesome!
Saturday: Transfer calls :( Then we went to the temple with Eddie! He got to bring his grandfathers name! So great! Then we emailed and Johnzee came to visit us:) That night we got to hang out with all the ladies from church and watched the Women's Session of General Conference!!! It was soooooo good! Plus we had some awesome treats :) Wouldn't be a ladies night without chocolate!
Sunday: Church was great! It was sad having to say goodbye to everyone! After church we went to go and visit STACIE! She is now being taught by the Mooresville elders and is on date to be baptized! I promised her that I would come back for her baptism:)
Love you all! Have a greattttt week!!! Go read John 4!!! Its a good one:)
I am too lazy today to tell about our week but Sis B had a great email to explain!
"" haha hey :) this week, Sister Griffiths and I had a moment of realization...that missionaries are just the Lord's official stalkers haha in the best way possible of course. We have fun:)
It was Spring Break on campus this week so no students were here, but somehow we still had people to teach and saw miracles....the Lord provides that's for sure.
One day we decided to check out campus to try again, it was dead of course so we decided to leave to be more productive elsewhere, but on our way out, we ran into one of our potential investigators. His appointment didn't work out last week, so we decided to just sit down right there and have our lesson. So we did, and it was no coincidence that we just so happen to see him that day, because that lesson was goooood. His need was really prevalent and the Gospel had a lot of application to him. Then as we were finishing up, his friend came and sat down and started asking really good questions too, so we had like another little lesson haha but now they are both interested and we are e x c i t e d for them:)
Another fun fact for the week....there are a lot of Spanish speakers here, and occasionally we get texts in Spanish, or talk to the Spanish missionaries, or Spanish investigators...we learned real quick this week (after me reading a text in Spanish) that Sister Burgon is real white and it's a good thing I got called to speak english hahahahaha good laughs for sure:)
We also got to teach Daffany and Meydi this week. Its really cool to see their desire to learn. They have been taught before, so it's awesome to teach them again and refresh their memories and see their interest increase. Their little sister, Ashley, sat in on the lesson too and now we are teaching her YAY:)
I HAVE THE STRONGEST TESTIMONY OF MEMBER MISSIONARY WORK!!! All of our investigators that came to church yesterday were because of members helping us out, bringing their friends, and just doing a really good job to connect and fellowship. ""
Love you all!
